Before your dog's first daycare session in Boston, they'll need to be current on several vaccinations. This isn't optional or negotiable — it's the foundation of keeping every dog in the facility safe. Understanding the requirements early saves you a last-minute scramble and ensures your dog can start daycare at Pawmenities on schedule.
Vaccination requirements can vary slightly between Boston-area facilities, but the core requirements are consistent. Here's the complete guide — what's required, what's recommended, what the timelines look like, and how to make the process as smooth as possible for you and your dog.
Required Vaccinations
Rabies. Required by Massachusetts state law for all dogs. Your dog must have a current rabies vaccination — either a one-year or three-year certificate. No facility in Greater Boston will accept a dog without proof of rabies vaccination. This is non-negotiable.
DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus). This combination vaccine protects against four serious diseases. Puppies receive a series of shots starting at 6–8 weeks, with boosters until 16 weeks. Adult dogs need boosters every 1–3 years depending on your vet's protocol. Must be current for daycare admission at any reputable boarding or daycare facility.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough). Required for any group setting — daycare, boarding, grooming, even group dog walking. Bordetella is highly contagious in social environments, and the vaccine significantly reduces both transmission and severity. Must be current within 6 months — not annually like some other vaccines. At Pawmenities, we require Bordetella to be updated every six months without exception.
Increasingly Required: Canine Influenza
Canine Influenza (CIV H3N2 and H3N8) has become a standard requirement at most premium Boston Seaport and Back Bay facilities, including Pawmenities. Outbreaks in the Boston metro area in recent years have made this vaccine essential for any dog in group settings.
The canine influenza vaccine requires an initial two-dose series administered 2–4 weeks apart, followed by annual boosters. Plan ahead — if your dog hasn't had the initial series, you'll need at least a month before they're eligible for daycare. This is the vaccine that catches most pet parents off guard because of the two-dose requirement.

Recommended Vaccinations
Leptospirosis. Highly recommended for urban dogs in Boston. Lepto is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated water — puddles, standing water, and areas frequented by wildlife. Given Boston's urban environment, many veterinarians consider this a core vaccine for city dogs. While not universally required for daycare admission, we strongly recommend it.
Lyme Disease. Recommended for dogs who spend time on the North Shore, Lynnfield, MA, and other suburban areas where tick exposure is high. Not typically required for daycare admission, but a wise investment for your dog's health.
Vaccination Timelines for New Daycare Dogs
If your dog is fully vaccinated and current on everything, enrollment can happen quickly — often within a week of completing our onboarding process. But if your dog needs updates, here's a realistic timeline:
Puppies (under 16 weeks): Cannot attend daycare until the DHPP series is complete. Most puppies are fully vaccinated and ready for daycare by 16–18 weeks. Don't rush this — incomplete vaccination puts your puppy and every other dog at risk.
Adult dogs needing Canine Influenza: Allow 4–6 weeks. First dose, wait 2–4 weeks, second dose, wait 1–2 weeks for immunity to develop.
Adult dogs needing Bordetella only: The intranasal form provides faster protection — some veterinarians consider dogs protected within 48–72 hours, though waiting a week is safer.
What to Bring and How to Submit Records
Most facilities including Pawmenities accept digital vaccination records sent directly from your veterinarian. This is the fastest method — your vet emails records to us, we verify and file them, and you're cleared for enrollment. We also accept physical copies brought at drop-off and records uploaded through our client portal.
Records must show: the specific vaccines administered, dates of administration, your veterinarian's practice information, and expiration dates. Titers (blood tests showing immunity levels) are generally not accepted in lieu of vaccination records at most Massachusetts daycare facilities — the legal and liability landscape requires documented vaccination.
Why These Requirements Exist
Vaccination requirements aren't arbitrary gatekeeping. They're the first line of defense against infectious disease in environments where dogs share space, water bowls, and toys. A single unvaccinated dog with Bordetella can infect an entire daycare facility in a day. Canine influenza outbreaks can shut down a facility for weeks.
At Pawmenities boarding and daycare, we enforce vaccination requirements strictly because every dog in our care deserves protection. It's not about bureaucracy — it's about the health of your dog and every dog they interact with. Families across South Boston, the Financial District, and the Seaport District trust us because we don't cut corners on safety.
